Birthday Parties

Science is magic! Celebrate your child's special day with a hands-on potions session for a wizarding themed birthday party. I am fully insured and can provide all equipment, reagents and consumables.  All sessions are fully risk assessed and delivered by Dr Laura Randle, an academic research scientist and STEM ambassador.

Each participants will each receive a BAT / CAT or TOAD certificate upon completion of their potions class.

Basic Alchemy Test (BATs) 

The potion master will provide expert tuition on how to create 3 exciting potions:

  • Fleeing spiders 
  • Fizzy potions

The potion master will provide expert tuition on how to create 5 exciting potions:

Optional extras to add on:

Potion master demonstrations (30 mins).
The young witch or wizard will be invited to help with some of the spells and potions. Demonstrations may include crystal ball, disappearing ink, bubble snake, water into wine, colour changing potions, ogres toothpaste and illusions.

FAQs

How much space is required?
Each participant will require a space at a table to conduct their spell and potions.  It is better for participants to stand in case of spillages etc. If you choose to add the potion master demonstrations I will require a table with access to a plug socket. A community hall is the ideal venue.

How long does it take to set up and pack away?
Laura typically requires 45 mins to set up the session and 30 mins to pack away. I will require access to a tap and waste water.

Are extra adult helpers required?
With younger participants, session typically run easier with extra adults to help.

Can the guests wear wizarding clothes?
Participants are actively encouraged to dress up!  It may be necessary to remove cloaks during the session if they interfere with the potions.  Participants are asked to ensure their hair is tied back.

How to book?
Please email sciencegeekworkshop@outlook.com to express your interest. Once we have some key details about your party, we will then send you a quote which explains the activities, the price, and also how to pay the deposit which secures your date.  We’ll then contact you the week before the party to get final numbers of guests and check on any queries you may have. You will only pay for the guests who are confirmed and we send you an invoice the week before. Full payment is due 48h before the day of the party.  My diary gets full very quickly.  Book early to avoid disappointment

Laura is happy to visit your home, garden or venue you have hired.  

Terms and Conditions

*Prices quoted include up to 20 people and are correct as of Oct 2022.  Travel to and from venue is not included.  Mileage is calculated at 45p/mile from Widnes, Cheshire.

A non-refundable deposit is required to secure a booking.

Please pay in full 48h before the party.  We will contact you to finalise  numbers 7 days before the party to enable us to prepare for the session.

Laura is an academic research scientist and STEM ambassador. She has a Phd in Pharmacology and Toxicology (Drugs and poisons) so is a real-life potions master!  She runs hands-on science workshops for guiding and scouting and has  adapted her sessions to a birthday party format. She has over 20 years experience working with youth groups and uniformed organisations and an enhanced DBS certificate.  Laura always tries to make her science sessions as authentic as possible and provide the young people fun hands-on  experiments.
